For the past 3 years, University of Detroit Mercy’s ASDA chapter has worked to organize a mission trip to serve communities in extreme need of dental care. In the small town of Chichicastenango in the mountains of Guatemala, a team of 15 dental students and 3 faculty members has served over 400 patients each summer during the week-long trip. Many of the patients seen have gone without dental care their entire lives as they either do not have access to facilities or lack the funds for treatment. The group provides oral health education, cleanings, fluoride treatments, and extractions to this underserved population. In addition, each patient is sent home with toothpaste, floss, and toothbrushes. With their unique set of skills, this dental team is able to make a true difference in each patient’s current oral health status as well as inspire them to practice proper oral care at home. Due to the success and influence this trip seems to make on the communities visited, UDM ASDA hopes to continue this trip annually.
